Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to Etihad Arena In Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Sat., Oct. 22, 2022, featuring a highly anticipated match up for the vacant 155-pound title between former division kingpin, Charles Oliveira, against Islam Makhachev, who enter “Fight Island” with a combined 21-fight unbeaten run. In UFC 280’s ESPN+-streamed pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event, Bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling defends his title against former two-time division roost-ruler, T.J. Dillashaw. Last, and certainly not least, former 135-pound champion, Petr Yan, will lock horns with superstar in the making, “Sugar” Sean O’Malley.

O’Malley leg kick. 1-1-2 lands for him after eating a low kick. More low kicks from O’Malley, who avoids a long hook and lands a right cross. Two minutes in. Solid low kick from Yan. Quick O’Malley jab. Yan shoots, gets the rear body lock. Knee on the break. O’Malley lands a straight left with two minutes to go.

More pressure from Yan, O’Malley landing jabs. Overhand left by Yan. Low kick to double left to high-amplitude double-leg. Full guard with a minute to go. O’Malley makes it to his feet. Yan low kick, O’Malley body kick. Yan weaves through a long combo. 1-2 lands for O’Malley, who eats a calf kick and looks for his own takedown. Close round. 10-9 Yan.

Round 2: Hard body kick and left hook for Yan. Right cross from O’Malley, then a big straight left that has Yan hurt. Yan hits the deck on a follow-up, but makes it to his feet and just blasts O’Malley with a baseball bat of a straight left before wrenching him down into guard. One minute in. Hard punches from Yan. O’Malley considers an armbar, tries to stand, taken back down. Back to his feet, eats a knee to the body. Two minutes in. Yan re-shoots, good pummeling by O’Malley, Hard knee by Yan on the break. Slick trip from Yan, can’t establish on top. O’Malley 1-2. Yan looking to mug against the fence. Two minutes to go.

Stiff jab by Yan. O’Malley body kick. Nasty body kick from Yan met by a hook. Another body kick. Yan low kick, O’Malley combo. Yan shoots behind a flurry with a minute to go. Another successful takedown. Solid punches from the top. 10-9 Yan.

Round 3: O’Malley looks for a series of jabs. Yan tries a flying switch kick, can’t get a single-leg. Brief clinch. Low kick and double jab from O’Malley. Yan low kick. O’Malley picking at the lead leg, lands a straight left a minute in. Yan body kick, falls short with the follow-up. Yan punches his way in for another takedown attempt, get finish the tree-top. Nice knee and left hook from O’Malley have Yan cut. O’Malley on the attack. Trading bombs in center cage. O’Malley 1-2, Yan left hook two minutes in. O’Malley head kick prompts Yan to shoot. O’Malley defending against the fence. Yan switches to a double and O’Malley flubs a guillotine to end up on his back. Two minutes to go.

O’Malley looking for a kimura. Back to his feet. They separate with just under 90 on the clock. O’Malley 1-2. Both miss big with kill shots, then Yan drills him with a huge straight left before looking for another takedown. O’Malley granby rolls to freedom. Yan’s eye is a mess. O’Malley firing jabs, gets dragged down by a reactive shot. Yan ends the round blasting away. What a fight. 10-9 O’Malley.

155 lbs.: Beneil Dariush vs. Mateusz Gamrot

Round 1: Lead right to level change from Gamrot, no dice. Dariush tries a head kick. Reactive shot from Gamrot, who absorbs a knee and out-scrambles Dariush to avoid a back take. Dariush rolls for a kneebar. Gamrot gets free and holds onto a rear waist lock a minute in. They separate. Blood’s coming from Gamrot’s ear. Low kick from Dariush. Gamrot catches a low kick for a takedown. Dariush gets to his knees and granby rolls again. Awkward leglock position two minutes in. Now a traditional 50/50. Dariush uses it to scramble up, Gamrot still attached. Right hand on the exit from Gamrot with two minutes to go.

Dariush stalking forward, has to fight off another level change. Rear crucifix for Dariush. Gamrot powering through, completes the takedown. One minute to go. Again with the body lock as Dariush stands, swatting right on the break. Dariush body kick. Gamrot tries a flying front kick, eats a body kick. 10-9 Dariush on damage.

Round 2: Early shot from Gamrot, lands a knee on the exit. Low kick lands for Dariush, nice jab behind it. Left hands fall short. Low kick a minute in, eats a left cross. Nice step-in knee. Body kick. Gamrot shoots, rebuffed. Two minutes in. Dariush body kick, straight left falls short. Quick right lands for Gamrot, who fakes him out on a shot, then powers through a knee for another. Dariush denies it again. Two minutes to go.

Reactive shot by Gamrot, still can’t get it or the follow-up ankle pick. Nice 1-2 lands for Dariush. Hard leg kick, eats a straight right. Glancing head kick. Counter left. Gamrot tries to double the right, runs into a left with a minute to go. Right cross by Gamrot, both try head kicks behind it. Jump knee to level change by Gamrot and he wheelbarrows Dariush to the mat before looking for a last-second ankle lock. 10-9 Dariush.

Round 3: Gamrot chains a level change into a leglock attempt. Dariush fights it off and fires a head kick on the exit. Low kicks. One minute in. Intercepting knee. Solid overhand right by Gamrot behind it. Dariush 1-2. Powerful shot by by Gamrot, relentlessly trying to chain it. Great defense by Dariush. Two minutes to go.

Gamrot body kick. Dariush lands his own. Dariush counters a body kick with a vicious overhand left that drops Gamrot. Gamrot immediately scrambles into a takedown attempt, can’t get it, and gets back to stalking. Body kick with a minute to go. Hard 1-2. Gamrot tries a flying knee, shoots, somehow completes it into north-south. Dariush gets to his knees and stands. They trade power hands. 10-9 Dariush.

Final result: Dariush def. Gamrot by unanimous decision


125 lbs.: Katlyn Chookagian vs. Manon Fiorot

Round 1: Fiorot pushing forward, lands a 2-1. Chookagian tries a body kick. Nice straight right. 1-2. Fiorot falling short with check hooks. Oblique kick a minute in. Chookagian lands a 1-2, briefly ties up. Quick exchange in center cage. More side kicks to the knee from Fiorot. Side kick to the body. Two minutes in. Chookagian ducks a 1-2. Body shots. Hard right hook lands for Fiorot but Chookagian is outlanding her so far. Two minutes to go.

Side kick lands for Fiorot. Lead right hook, gets caught with a head kick leaning back. Fiorot 3-2. Side kick, right hand on the break. One minute to go. Both land body kicks. Two-piece, body kick, right hook. Chookagian body kick. Low kick. 10-9 Chookagian.

Round 2: Trading in the center to start. Side kicks from Fiorot. Flurry falls short, kick to the knee does not. One minute in. Another side kick from Fiorot met by a straight right. Chookagian leg kick, eats a counter two-piece. Fiorot falls short with body shots, lands a pair of right hooks. Two minutes in. Fiorot side kick. 1-2-3. Counter right by Chookagian, but it seems like Fiorot’s landing more this round. There’s a check hook from Chookagian as I type that. Big 1-2 by Fiorot, combo by Chookagian. Two minutes to go.

Hard straight left for Fiorot. Good jab, avoids a head kick. Chookagian to the body. She misses by a mile with a spinning back fist. Another 1-2 from Fiorot. One minute to go. 1-2. Side kick downstairs. Counter left. Big collision in center cage. Counter 1-2 lands for Fiorot. 10-9 Fiorot.

Round 3: Early punching volleys from Fiorot. Double jab. Chookagian throwing with her. Straight left by Fiorot, side kicks. One minute in. Fiorot throwing more volume at the moment, neither landing super clean. Chookagian leg kick, Fiorot knee kick. Fiorot denies a level change. Two minutes in. Fiorot check hook. Chookagian jab. Quick exchange. Leg kick by Fiorot. Neither landing clean, another side kick downstairs by Fiorot. Two minutes to go.

Chookagian to the body. Fiorot’s taken her foot off the gas. Chookagian combo. Check hook by Fiorot. Chookagian low kick, eats a right hook in return. One minute to go. Fiorot times a low kick for a takedown. Chookagian manages to elevate with a hook and return to her feet. Back to trading punches. Fiorot side kick. Solid knee from Fiorot at the bell. 10-9 Fiorot?
