LAS VEGAS – Deron Winn spoke to reporters at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 194 media day.
Winn (7-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) takes on Phil Hawes in a middleweight matchup on the main card of UFC Fight Night 194. The event takes place on Saturday night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streams on ESPN+.
Winn believes the matchup with Hawes is a favorable one for him, which is why he is glad the UFC kept the matchup together after it was postponed in July due to Winn’s rib injury. Both grew up as wrestlers and Winn says he has known about Hawes since they were 15 years old, although they never faced each other on the mat.
“I think he relies on his grappling occasionally,” Winn told MMA Junkie and other reporters during media day. “I think I will cause a big mishap for him there. I like to think my striking is a little underrated and he’s one of the shorter guys in the division, so it will help me be able to showcase my striking skills as well.”
Winn also speaks about overcoming the rib injury, what his goals are for his MMA career, and much more.
