Demetrious Johnson doesn’t have a love for what the video game industry has produced so far when it comes to mixed martial arts titles. That’s why he would be all for seeing a possible ONE Championship game play more like the classic fighting games we all know and love.

The ONE Championship flyweight Grand Prix winner’s love for video gaming is well documented. Especially when it comes to fighting games. However, the popular Twitch streamer has not been impressed with the games created with the intent to capture MMA in the most entertaining way possible. Actually, he has never been impressed with any sports games for that matter. Because in his mind, why play a digital version of something he can just go do in real life?

Demetrious Johnson doesn’t like traditional sports video games

“Mixed martial arts is such a unique sport, and I feel the closest to ever capture the game of mixed martial arts has been [EA Sports] with the UFC game. But when I play that game, I’m like this game’s horrible. It’s a simulation. The best fighting games that have ever been done at a high level have always been Street Fighter and Tekken. Even guilty gear. Those are the games that I rather play,” Johnson told MixedMartialArts.com.

“I’ve never played a sports game, a football game, a soccer game, a basketball game. The only [sports] games I’ve played is NBA Jam or NFL Blitz. Other then that, I don’t play NBA 2K and that other sh*t, because if I really want to play basketball, I’ll go outside and play. So just like in mixed martial arts, if I want to go fight I’ll go outside and fight, or go to the gym and train.”

DJ hopes to one day see a Street Fighter-esque MMA video game

Although the UFC flyweight great hasn’t been thrilled with hugely popular sports franchises like Madden, NBA 2K, or EA UFC, there are legendary franchises he does adore. The Twitch streamer with over 174,000 would love to see a blending of both worlds. Real world ONE Championship personalities competing in a fight game that plays like iconic brands in Street Fighter and Tekken.

“Street Fighter and Tekken; I can’t throw fireballs and I can’t do backflips and all that stuff [in a real fight]. For me, I’m not disappointed they haven’t come out with the ONE Championship game because if they’re going to come out with it, I want them to do it perfect and right. Any influence I would have on the game would be let’s get away from the simulation of the game. Let’s just make a dope Street Fighter-esque game with Capcom, but layer the skin of the athletes on [the players],” he said.

“When you play Street Fighter 5, every character feels different. Ken feels different from Ryu, Ryu feels different from Akuma. Nowadays, you can make the game and characters have specific movements. Why not do that [for a ONE game]. I would vouch for something like that. Let’s sign a deal with Capcom and have Capcom do ONE Championship’s game. Then you can do Street Fighter vs ONE Championship.”

In the full interview in the video embedded above, the MMA star also talks about his upcoming special-rules fight with ONE flyweight Muay Thai champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon, his April loss to Adriano Moraes, and much more.

What do you think? Is “Mighty Mouse” on to something with wanting an MMA game that plays more like traditional fighting games instead of a sports simulation?
