We are just two weeks away from Diaz vs Lawler 2, and the return of the incomparable Nick Diaz. With the event so close, the Ultimate Fighting Championship hype machine for the fight has started to roar its engines.
Diaz (26-9) and Robbie Lawler (28-15) first fought when UFC events were only two digits at UFC 47, all the way back in April 2004. On that night at the Mandalay Bay events center in Las Vegas, Nevada, Diaz outboxed “Ruthless” and handed him just the second loss of his career by knockout.
As the pair went on to have memorable careers, fans have always wondered what could have been if these two greats of the welterweight division had tangled again in a rematch. Well, at UFC 266 on September 24, MMA fans will get a better-late-than-never scenario when they finally face each other again, 17 years after the original.
Diaz vs Lawler 2: Lawler should expect a ‘more dangerous’ man at UFC 266
In typical UFC fashion, the promotion has produced a documentary chronicling the uber-popular Diaz’s return to the Octagon after a six-year hiatus. On Saturday, the organization’s UFC Europe Twitter account posted a clip from the documentary, and the always confident Stockton, California native offered up some opinions on his upcoming rematch inside Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.
“I am actually way more of a dangerous fighter than I was when I fought Robbie Lawler the first time,” said Daiz. “I’m gonna really be unstoppable, having made the right decisions. I’m gonna beat Robbie again.”
Former UFC welterweight champion Lawler and one-time Strikeforce 170-pound king Diaz will face off on the main card of UFC 266. The event will kick off at 6 pm EST with preliminary action on ESPN and ESPN+. The US $69.99 main card pay-per-view will begin at 10 pm ET and air exclusively on ESPN+
