Heavyweights in need of W’s

UFC Vegas 28 includes three notable bookings in the heavyweight division. Two of which include top-15 ranked competitors, and all of them features big men entering the Octagon in serious need of getting back into the win column.

  • Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Augusto Sakai – The night’s headliner showcases two veterans of the division looking to bounce back from pivotal setbacks in their most recent Octagon outings. Jairzinho Rozenstruik fell to top-five fighter Ciryl Gane in his first headlining opportunity, and Augusto Sakai came up short against new free agent Alistair Overeem, also in his first main event booking. Both are skilled combatants who are younger than the division norm and were in the conversation as the next fresh faced title contender. That is, until their recent losses. Both need a win to prove those last fights were just bumps in the road, and they are a future building block of the heavyweight division for years to come.
  • Walt Harris vs. Marcin Tybura – The UFC Vegas 28 main event pits two heavyweights in very different positions in their careers. Marcin Tybura is on his best run in the UFC yet, having won four straight. After a hot streak of his own, Walt Harris has lost two straight and seems to be at a cross roads. Has he evolved to finally match the potential in his size and athleticism, or is he doomed to be a middle of the road 265-pounder often fighting just to stay in the rankings? We will soon find out June 5.
  • Ilir Latifi vs. Tanner Boser – The lone heavyweight booking on the prelims has one very specific narrative. Ilir Latifi needs a win to prove he still deserves a spot on the UFC roster. After losing two straight in his long-time home at light heavyweight, he moved to heavyweight in February 2020 and lost a unanimous decision to Derrick Lewis. The saving grace for the Swede is his skid has come against ranked talent. But a fourth straight loss, and losing streaks in two different weight-classes would certainly put him in the cross-hairs of UFC brass looking to cut costs and invest in younger and cheaper talent. It’s a must-win situation for “The Sledgehammer.”
