In Jake Paul’s first bout as a member of the Showtime Boxing roster, he will once again take on former mixed martial arts welterweight champion. But this time the competition will be a bit stiffer.
That’s because the 3-0 boxer will take on the challenge of former Ultimate Fighting Championship 170 pound titleholder Tyron Woodley. The news was first reported by The Athletic’s boxing reporter Mike Coppinger via Twitter. Coppinger’s tweet announced the deal as well as a planned face-off between the two combatants in Miami on Friday.
Jake Paul versus Tyron Woodley is official
Miami, Florida is also the location of another Showtime Boxing promoted bout between Paul’s brother Logan, and former five-division boxing champion Floyd Mayweather. That matchup will take place two days later on June 6 on pay-per-view.
The news may come as a surprise to some, but the option to jump into boxing became available to Woodley after his long-time employer the UFC chose not to extend the 15-fight promotional veteran a new contract after finishing his current deal by losing four straight. The most recect defeat coming in March to fifth-ranked welterweight Vicente Luque. In April, “The Chose One” suggested the idea of a fight with Paul, but in an MMA cage. Although, when his run in the UFC came to an official end, a large payday in boxing surely became too good to pass up.
The fight will be the first in Paul’s multi-fight accord he signed with the network a few weeks back. Formerly a talent for upstart fight promoter Triller Fight Club, the YouTube star and sometimes actor made his pro boxing debut with a January 2020 win over fellow YouTube influencer Ali Eson Gib. He followed that up with a second straight knockout win, this time over former NBA guard Nate Robinson. However, after being a featured undercard fighter in his first two fights, he headlined his first TFC event in April. On that night, he upset former Bellator and ONE Championship welterweight champion Ben Askren by knockout in the first round.
No official date is set for Jake Paul versus Tyron Woodley, however on betting site SportsBetting.ag, the 24-year-old is already a favorite over his 15 years older future foe.
