Ben Askren blasts Jorge Masvidal for trying to get Leon Edwards title fight
Nearly as fast as Kamaru Usman crashed to the canvas after being hit with a head kick by Leon Edwards in the UFC 278 main event, Jorge Masvidal was trying to align himself to fight for the title.
Masvidal and Edwards have history. ‘Gamebred’ hit Edwards with the famous “three piece and a soda” following his win over Darren Till in London in March 2019. In his next fight, Masvidal knocked out Askren and set the record for the fastest KO in UFC history.
Masvidal defeated Nate Diaz in his next outing to win the “BMF belt,” but then lost three fights in a row. Two to former champion Usman and to Colby Covington in March.
Askren took to social media to criticize Masvidal’s efforts to secure a fight with Edwards now that Edwards holds the title.
“Been off the grid camping….. why is not getting a title shot off 3 losses in a row a controversial opinion,” Askren questioned.
“Also I would rather be a has been than a never was,” Askren posted in a follow-up tweet. In a third social media post, Askren wrote, “Lastly you can’t avoid someone for 3 years then try to pick a fight once they get a belt.”
