UFC 278 Results: When, Where, and Who?

UFC 278 takes place on Saturday, August 20, at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. The fight card is topped by a welterweight title fight and a middleweight grudge match.

UFC 278 main event: Kamaru Usman vs. Leon Edwards

Company president Dana White has labeled Kamaru Usman the greatest UFC welterweight champion of all time and the current pound-for-pound best fighter on the planet. That’s a monumental claim, but one that is hard to deny. Usman enters UFC 278 with a 23-1 record, with his only loss coming in just the second fight of his career nearly a decade ago. He won the 21st edition of The Ultimate Fighter in 2015 and has rolled through everyone the UFC has thrown at him, including the likes of Tyron Woodley, Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal, Demian Maia, Gilbert Burns, and Rafael dos Anjos.

He defends his belt against Leon Edwards at UFC 278. Edwards may face a difficult task in taking the belt from Usman, but he is no slouch either. At 19-3 with 1 no contest, Edwards last loss in the Octagon was a decision to Usman in 2015. He has since won nine bouts with another ending in a no contest because of an accidental eye poke.

UFC 278 co-main event: Paulo Costa vs. Luke Rockhold

The UFC 278 co-main event is a fight that has been a long time coming, as perennial contender Paulo Costa squares off with former champion Luke Rockhold in a middleweight grudge match. At 13-2, Costa has long been a contender in the middleweight division, but has frequently had trouble on the scale. He convinced the UFC to give him another middleweight bout to face Rockhold, who sits at 16-5, but hasn’t competed in the Octagon since July of 2019.

UFC 278 feature bout: Jose Aldo vs. Mareb Dvalishvili

The UFC 278 pay-per-view card also features a pivotal bantamweight bout between former featherweight champion Jose Aldo (31-7), who sits a No. 3 in the 135-pound division and Mareb Dvalishvili (14-4), who is currently ranked No. 6 at bantamweight. An impressive victory for the winner could propel them into a position to challenge for the title after Aljamain Sterling defends against TJ Dillashaw at UFC 280.

UFC 278 Women’s Flyweight Bout Canceled

Due to a medical issue, Shanna Young has been removed from her women’s flyweight bout against Miranda Maverick. The bout has been cancelled from the event.

As a result, a men’s welterweight contest pitting A.J. Fletcher against Ange Loosa was moved from the early prelims to become the opening bout of the UFC 278 Preliminary fight card to be simulcast on ESPN+, ABC, and ESPN.

Next Up: UFC Fight Night Gane vs. Tuivasa

The UFC next heads to Paris, France, for UFC Fight Night: Gane vs. Tuivasa. Gane (10-1) is the former interim heavyweight champion. He welcomes the venerable fight promotion to his home country for the UFC’s first event in France. He’ll square off against Tai Tuivasa (14-3), with the winner hoping to find a way into a title bout in the near future.
