It’s Friday (June 24, 2022), and that means it’s once again time for some Professional Fighters League (PFL) regular season action. This week’s event features Heavyweight and Featherweights, including a clash between recent tournament winner, Bruno Cappelozza, and Contender Series veteran, Matheus Scheffel.

The co-feature sees Anthony Pettis look for his second PFL victory against fellow UFC veteran, Stevie Ray, while Chris Wade takes on Kyle Bochniak in another clash of Octagon exports and Renan Ferreira opens the main card against Klidson Abreu.

PFL 5 ROUND-BY-ROUND COVERAGE

265 lbs.: Bruno Cappelozza vs. Matheus Scheffel

Round one: Quick jabs from Cappelozza. Left hand exchange, low kick connects. More stiff jabs. Scheffel falls short with a two-piece. Ona minute in. Scheffel low kick. Cappelozza digs a right downstairs. Both looking for combos. Cappelozza check hook. Rapid exchange two mintues in. Scheffel answers a jab with a low kick. Both fire combinations. Low kick exchanges. Two minutes to go.

Cappelozza’s speed winning the day so far. Scheffel tries a head kick after eating a body shot. Low kicks working for him and he suddenly answers a left hook with an overhand right. Cappelozza shoots in response and Scheffel looks to press the advantage. Huge 1-2 from Scheffel as he continues to stalk. One minute to go. Cappelozza shoots, rebuffed. Scheffel marching after him, firing combinations. Head kick attempt. They trade on the fence. Cappelozza survives the round. 10-9 Scheffel.

Round two: They trade jabs to start. Cappelozza low kick. Good body shot. Scheffel low kick. One minute in. Counter left, combination on the fence. Body and low kicks. Trading jabs. Two minutes in. Long right from Scheffel. Pressure working well this round. Both fire left hooks on the fence. Two minutes to go.

Lull in the action. Jabs from Cappelozza. Scheffel 1-2. One minute to go. Cappelozza mixing his shots to the head and body. Double-leg attempt to a rear waist lock, denied. 10-9 Scheffel.

Round three: They slug it out in the center to start. Cappelozza jabs the body. Scheffel still pressuring. Low kick. One minute in. Tit-for-tat potshotting. Scheffel low kick, Cappelozza body shots. Two minutes in. More body work. Stiff jab. Cappelozza getting the momentum back. Well-timed shot denied. Two minutes to go.

Cross counter by Cappelozza. Head kick attempt. Scheffe;’s volume has cratered. One minute to go. Low kick and jab. Head kick attempts. 10-9 Cappelozza. Second round was close, so we’ll see how it plays out.

Final result: Scheffel def. Cappelozza by unanimous decision


155 lbs.: Anthony Pettis vs. Stevie Ray

Round one: Pettis tries an axe kick, then a flying knee not long after. Ray steadily advancing, falls short with a 1-2. Knee to right cross by Pettis. Body kick a minute in. Spinning back kick appears to land, then a counter right. Ray shoots against the fence. Jockeying for position. Two minutes in. They separate. Ray shoots again, rebuffed. Two minutes to go.

Left hand knocks Pettis off-balance. Ray looking to pressure and open up on the fence. Pettis reverses and separates when Ray tries to tie up. 1-2 from Ray. Low-high 2-3. One minute to go. Pettis lands a counter jab, eats body shots. Slick throw attempt. Ray still targeting the body, lands a 1-2. They exchange crosses. Pettis looks for a tornado kick in the final seconds. 10-9 Ray on the late work.

Round two: Ray continuing to press forward. Low kick exchange. Sneaky Brazilian kick from Pettis, avoids a Thai clinch. Body kick a minute in, head kick behind it that buzzes Ray. Hard straight right. Ray still trying to pressure. Another right cross lands for Pettis. Ray tries a 1-2. Counter 2-1 and body kick from Pettis. Counter right to knee tap, but Ray looking to take the back. Ray landing punches from turtle. Looking to get his hooks in. Two minutes to go.

Full body triangle for Ray. Pettis manages to turn into guard, but Ray still has the body triangle locked in and Pettis’ midsection looks like a toothpaste tube. Ray stretches him out a bit and forces the tap.

Final result: Ray def. Pettis by submission (body triangle)


265 lbs.: Renan Ferreira vs. Klidson Abreu

Round one: Both men staying out of striking range. Ferreira tries a head kick and counter right. Snap kick downstairs. Both swing rights a minute in. Abreu looks for a head kick. He punches into the clinch two minutes in and takes Ferreira down into half guard. Two minutes in.

Abreu unable to pass. Ferreira tries to sweep, stymied by the fence. Back to half guard with a minute to go. Abreu not super active from the top. 10-9 Abreu.

Round two: Overhand left lands for Abreu. Counter right connects. Ferreira tries a head kick. Abreu again punches into the clinch and takes him down with a body lock. One minute in. Abreu passes to side control, caught right back in half guard. Short hammerfists from Abreu. Two minutes in. Shoulder pressure. Looks for mount, can’t get it. Two minutes to go.

More pressure from Abreu. Ferreira trying to get to his seat with a minute to go. More control until the bell, plus some late ground-and-pound. 10-9 Abreu.

Round three: Ferreira not showing much urgency for a guy clearly down two rounds. Abreu tries to clinch, avoids a knee. One minute in. Short uppercut into the clinch for Abreu, who easily locks his hands. Nice hip toss puts him on top in half guard once again. Two minutes in. Chipping away as usual. Two minutes to go.

Ferreira really dong jack and squat to get up. Abreu in total cruise control. Side control, can’t get the crucifix, back to half guard. One minute to go. Some punches in the waning seconds. 10-9 Abreu.

Final result: Abreu def. Ferreira by unanimous decision


145 lbs.: Chris Wade vs. Kyle Bochniak

Round one: Bochniak pushing forward as always, Wade picking him off with kicks and counters. Clean double left from Wade. Body kick. 2-3 by Bochniak, who scrambles out of a single-leg. Inside low kick appears to damage Bochniak’s leg. Wade follows with another, then goes high with a head kick that floors Bochniak. A few more punches and it’s over.

Final result: Wade def. Bochniak by TKO (head kick and punches)


265 lbs.: Ante Delija vs. Shelton Graves

Round one: Delija steadily advancing. Graves looking to kick. Body kick lands for Delija. Awkward rush by Graves into the clinch a minute in. Stuck there for the next minute. Delija reverses. Finally they separate. Two minutes to go.

Delija cracks him with a series of straight rights. Graves trying to circle away. Ugly blitz. There’s a decent left hand met by a cross from Delija. Graves jumps in and their heads collide with a minute to go. Delija connects with another straight right when they resume. Counter right this time. Low kick by Graves. Big exchange carries past the bell. 10-9 Delija.

Round two: I swear if they try to spin Graves’ flailing as “unorthodox” one more time I’m going to headbutt something.

Tentative start, then a quick exchange that ends with Graves pressing him against the fence. Short work from Graves, Delija reverses. Two minutes in. Ref splits them up. Back to trading punches. Graves again leads with his face and again their heads collide. The ref takes a point. Delija puts him on the fence with two minutes to go.

Delija changes levels, rebuffed, eats a knee. One minute to go. Jockeying for position. They separate with 30 to go. Uppercut from Delija, tries to open up, clinch. 10-8 Delija? This is terrible.

Round three: Back to the clinch. One minute in. Separation, quick exchange. Delija puts him on the fence again. Graves reverses. Two minutes in. Just an absolutely atrocious fight. Reversed. Delija tries to open up on the break. Puts him on the fence again. Two minutes to go.

They separate. Lead right from Delija, puts him on the fence. They separate with a minute to go, Graves leads with his face again and gets clinched. Separation in the last 30. Clinch. Knee from Delija. 10-9 Delija.

Final result: Delija def. Graves by unanimous decision
