Another year has rolled around as the global COVID-19 pandemic continues at a time when the U.S. is averaging 550,000 reported infections per day as the omicron variant surges across the country.
Since the start of the pandemic in early 2020, procedures and protocols for all major sports leagues have fluctuated. The UFC is no different. With the first event of the promotion’s 2022 schedule approaching, athletes and their teams competing at UFC on ESPN 32 on Jan. 15 have been notified of the promotion’s most recent protocols.
On Thursday, MMA Junkie acquired a copy of the protocols and procedures distributed in a memo earlier in the day. Here are where things stand to kick off the new year.
COVID-19 testing
Athletes and corners are required to take three pre-fight tests. The first test will be self-administered using a home test kit sent out by the promotion, and it will be conducted prior to travel. Tests will need to be conducted and mailed the same day they are received to insure proper turnaround time.
If Test 1 is negative, Test 2 will be a throat swab upon arrival at the host hotel. Fighters and corners must quarantine in either their hotel room or workout room until test results come back. Contact with any non-team member during this time is prohibited.
If Test 2 is negative, fighters may proceed with fight week activities. Athletes will take a third and final test on the morning of weigh-ins, on day before fight night. After the test, athletes and corners must quarantine until they receive negative test results.
If a test is positive, the individual must stay in his or her room and await further instructions.
What happens after a positive test
Individuals who test positive must comply with CDC guidelines for quarantine and travel. If someone in a camp tests positive, UFC medical staff will determine whether the fighter will be permitted to fight or if they will have to follow the same CDC guidelines as if they themselves tested positive.
Masking
All athletes, regardless of vaccination status, will need to wear facial coverings when they are not competing in compliance with NAC rules. Corners must wear masks at all times.
CDC guidelines and self-reporting
The UFC recommends fighters follow CDC guidelines including hand-washing, limiting physical contact, social distancing, and wearing face coverings. If a fighter or corner becomes symptomatic, they are instructed to immediately notify UFC staff.
