If you’re a longtime MMA fan, you undoubtedly know about some of Hector Lombard’s accomplishments in and out of the cage. But did you know the 43-year-old Cuban is the proud owner of 17 patents, as well?
Lombard recently revealed his engineering prowess to MMA Junkie when discussing how much longer he wanted to actively compete.
“Believe it or not, I feel younger than 10 years ago,” Lombard said. “I feel great. My body has no issues. My mind has no issues. My memory is super sharp, as you can see, through how many patents I’ve been building.
“My mind is sharp, and I want to have 10 more fights. That’s my limit.”
OK, now typically, an MMA Junkie headline would probably focus on Lombard’s plan of 10 more fights. But hold on – did he point to a row full of patents over his shoulder?
Lombard said he’s actually the owner of 17 unique patents and was happy to demonstrate one of his inventions designed to address an everyday concern.
“You have a water bottle, a bottle of water, right?” Lombard asked. “You try to put something in the water bottle. It’s impossible, so I came out with my scoop. This is a scoop with a funnel at the end, so you pick up the powder … and it has the funnel, so all you have to do is you flip it.”
Lombard’s longstanding reputation as a bit of a wild man doesn’t seem to dovetail with the image of a curious entrepreneur, tinkering around in his garage while trying to build a better mousetrap. But Lombard believes he’s often a little bit misunderstood.
“The funny part is they they always call me dumb, idiot, that I’m crazy,” Lombard said. “‘Don’t deal with Hector. Hector is crazy in the head.’
“No, I’m not crazy, at all. I just don’t like people to f*ck with me. I don’t like people to bully me, and I like people to respect me. … But if you’re not going to respect me, I’m going to show you how to respect me really quick.”
Just when you thought you knew it all about Hector Lombard. Coming soon to “Shark Tank” – or to a ring, or a cage, or a Triad. Basically just wherever he can fight Tyron Woodley.
