UFC legend Donald Cerrone recently found out that not only do you need to protect yourself at all times in a fight, but you better do the same when raiding honey from your own personal beehive.
Seventeen-year MMA veteran Cerrone (36-16) has always been viewed as one of the toughest fighters the sport has seen over the last two decades. “Cowboy” set records in the UFC as he built a reputation as a man down for a fight whenever and wherever. However, even the most durable of individuals have a limit. And when it comes to honey bees and their stingers, even a legit bad a** fighter isn’t up to going the distance with a hive of honey-crazed bees.
Donald Cerrone gets a 5-piece and a soda from a hive of bees
On Tuesday, Cerrone posted a video to his personal YouTube page [h/t BJPenn] of an attempt to rest away some honey from a hive located on his “BMF” ranch. From the start, Cerrone seemed to be rolling the dice as he popped the lid and reached in for a honeycomb without any protective gear on. At first glance, it seems like that decision was pure foolishness. However, the choice was actually guided by a false sense of security from previous visits to get a hold of the sweet nectar. Of course, you can only trust bees but so far and in this instance, the hive of insects had just about enough of the lightweight and welterweight veteran frequenting their home.
“The bees, I’ve never seen them attack us like that. Even when we’ve opened it up and we take the hives and we take the honey before, they don’t ever get that crazy. I don’t know if the hive is getting so much bigger and there are new bees and they’re not used to us messing with them but normally we can take [the lid] off and they’re pretty docile. They are honey bees and they do have stingers, but man, they attacked us,” Cerrone said in the video.
Being the UFC gangsta that he is, “Cowboy” tried to fight through a couple of stings to pull a honeycomb out of the box hive. However, once the sting count reached five, and he took a few to the face, Cerrone tapped and went searching for his bee suit.
“I think I got stung in the chest, in the face, and the ear, lip. And it was just like, ‘Whoa, retreat, retreat!’” he said with a laugh. “It was definitely interesting. I haven’t ever been stung like that. Of course, we were robbing honey out of their hive so they weren’t stoked on it.”
Cerrone, 38, is winless in his last six fights dating back to 2019. In his last Octagon appearance, he suffered a first-round technical knockout loss to MMA journeyman Alex Morono.
The WEC veteran showed some legit toughness in taking at least five stings. It was far less dramatic than the classic cinematic moment from the film Tommy Boy below, which is undoubtedly peak bee sting absurdity. Enjoy.
