Makenzie Dern vs Marina Rodriguez
While Dern and Rodriguez may not be a title eliminator matchup, it’s pretty damn close. These two Brazilians are two of the fastest-rising talents in the division and have the potential to be serious threats to whoever holds the strawweight title in 2022. Both have strengths — Dern’s grappling and Rodriguez’s striking — but both are more well-rounded than they get credit for. It’s a clash of elite talents that could very well decide who is the next great Brazilian strawweight in the UFC.
Prediction: Rodriguez by unanimous decision
Randy Brown vs. Jared Gooden
Win or lose, Randy Brown is always worth a watch because his fights rarely go the distance. In 11 Octagon appearances, eight of “Rudeboy’s” bouts came to a definitive end early. In Jared Gooden, he will get a dance partner that is also a willing finisher in his own right. The night’s co-main event has serious potential to win some performance bonuses.
Prediction: Brown by submission, round 2
Phil Hawes vs. Deron Winn
Phil Hawes vs Deron Winn is a fascinating fight because both men have strong wrestling pedigrees but prefer to show off their stand-up skills when it comes time to fight. And that strategy isn’t without merit as both have shown the ability to finish foes with their fists. Especially, when it comes to the man known as “Megatron.” Something will have to give and finding out which fighter decides striking isn’t worth the trouble will be entertaining to watch.
Prediction: Hawes by unanimous decision
