Nate Diaz rarely misses a chance to dunk on longtime rival Conor McGregor, and that war of words continued with a pair of social media posts on Monday.
The former “BMF” title contender and one-time lightweight title challenger took to Twitter to fire a shot at the Irish superstar, who continues to rest and recover after suffering a broken leg in his second straight loss to Dustin Poirier in their trilogy at UFC 264.
McGregor fell by TKO to Poirier back in January, but he was granted an immediate rematch in July, which is where he fell again after his leg snapped at the end of the opening round.
In response, Diaz posted a short backstage video where McGregor addresses their rematch from 2016 where the former two-division UFC champion earned a victory by majority decision after five grueling rounds. McGregor can be heard in the video calling Diaz a “tough bastard” with one of his coaches then commenting that he’s “the f*cking Terminator.”
“You should’ve already learned from this,” Diaz said on Twitter alongside the McGregor video.
Diaz then followed that up with a second video — this time showing Poirier in the hospital after he underwent hip surgery following a previously scheduled fight against Diaz that never actually happened.
The lightweights were scheduled to meet in 2018 at UFC 230, but Poirier was forced out of the matchup due to injury, and the fight was never rescheduled.
Diaz is more than happy to remind Poirier of that fact while also sending a message to McGregor how he plans to dispatch “The Diamond” in a much different fashion should they ever actually meet.
“Don’t trip though, I’ll show you how to do it,” Diaz said.
As much as Diaz might want the Poirier fight, it remains to be seen if he’s actually in the running for that particular matchup.
Following his second straight win over McGregor, Poirier was immediately mentioned as the next contender in line to face UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.
Poirier actually had a chance to compete for the vacant lightweight title following Khabib Nurmagomedov’s retirement, but he opted for the trilogy with McGregor rather than clash with Oliveira for the belt.
Right now, Poirier is still ranked No. 1 at lightweight according to the MMA Fighting Global MMA Rankings regardless of the UFC title. But it’s unknown if he’d prefer to pursue the Diaz fight rather than face off with Oliveira.
Obviously, Diaz has made his preference known as he looks to settle some unfinished business with Poirier in the octagon.
