UFC Vegas 27’s main card featured a battle between two skilled featherweight grapplers who have earned half of their wins by submission. The question for Ricardo Ramos and Bill Algeo before they entered the Octagon, was if the fight would be grappling heavy, or their ground talents would cancel each other out and force a test of their mettle on the feet.
Thirty seconds into the fight “Carcacinha” was able to get to the back of Algeo and sink in a rear-naked choke. However, the American was able to defend and get separation. In the striking, “Senor Perfecto” used his unorthodox techniques of odd footwork and angles to frustrate his Brazilian opponent a little. However, with over a minute left Ramos was able to get a hold of Algeo again and wrestle him to the mat a couple of times, and get back control once again. Overall he landed four takedowns in the round.
Ricardo Ramos out grapples Bill Algeo for a unanimous decision win
The first couple of minutes of the second displayed a competitive battle on the feet with both throwing a variety of strikes. Algeo landed a flying knee but was quickly countered into a takedown. Yet, just like every other time, Algeo was able to work back up and return things to a kickboxing fight. Ramos showed signs of fatigue in the round but was still able to score two more takedowns. However, entering the third, Algeo had landed twice as many strikes in each round.
Much of the final round occurred on the feet as both landed strikes on the other. But Algeo seemed to land the more notable and flashy shots. As the fight came to an end, it was an evenly matched scrap that was hard to score. With both having cases for the win based on their leads in strikes or takedowns.
After three hard-fought rounds, the judges leaned in favor of the takedowns from the Brazilian as he scored the unanimous decision win. Ramos bounces back from a TKO loss Lerone Murphy in July and moves to 6-2 inside the Octagon. For the Pennsylvania native Algeo, he moves to 1-2 in the UFC after scoring his first win in the promotion in November.
