Angela Hill: I get close to a top 5 ranking, and then …

The Underground

Angela Hill is currently ranked #12 in the women’s strawweight division heading into her fight vs. the unranked Ashley Yoder. With a loss, “Overkill” will be on a three-fight losing streak, and could fall from the rankings. So he needs a win, a big one, as she acknowledged in a recent interview with Nick Atkin for SCMP Sport‘s Post Fight podcast, and talked about it.

“I’ve been saying I’m on a seven-fight win streak, honestly I believe that in my head,” said Hill. “The last seven fights have been the best of my career. I have to believe that, because that’s how I go in there with the confidence I should have if I’d won the last two fights.”

“I really want a finish – that’s the easiest way to get noticed for a title shot. The strawweight division is pretty deep and you see a lot of girls who aren’t ranked breaking through just because they’re getting subs or TKOs. I wanna be one of those people.

“I feel I’m always right on the verge of being in the top five, and then something dumb happens. I’m trying to stop that trend. I feel every girl who’s ranked especially has a good chance of getting a title fight with two emphatic wins.

“That’s my goal. It doesn’t matter how many I take, I’m gonna be there ready, to either take a last-minute fight, or take a fight camp and knock out one of those girls who keep saying they won’t fight me.”

“Third time’s a charm. Covid has messed up my last two fight weeks, so hopefully this time I make it. Since I got back after my fight with Michelle [Waterson], I’ve just been working really hard in the gym and trying to develop some new skills and work on my offensive wrestling. When they offered me Ashley, I didn’t have her in mind at all, but I thought this would be a good test for that.

“I was training for the Tecia fight and that fell through the week of the fight again. Hoping I get the chance to see how those new skills pan out in the cage. I have more options from my back as well as my top game I can use now. Before I wasn’t really confident in it.

“I don’t want to force anything but try to make it as dominant as possible, and hopefully get a finish. Just anxious to get that chance.

UG, how do you think Saturday night’s fight goes?
